BSS Design Group (a merging of Building Surveying Services, Building Consultants, and Design Group Australia, Architects) was started in 1982 by Alasdair MacLeod and Nick Kukulka with the vision of creating a company known for providing assistance to people with everyday building problems. Helping people with concerns regarding their first home purchase or new home under construction quickly became the focus. Merging the two companies in 1999 extended the vision to include architectural services for people who might feel put off by traditional architects who spend most of their time providing spectacular designs for very expensive houses.

While BSS has grown since 1982, the core values and principles which Alasdair and Nick had have remained.
